UPS and FedEx 2027 Rate Increases: What Ecommerce Brands Will Pay

Carrier Updates
11-04-2026

UPS and FedEx will both raise their published shipping rates by an average of 5.9% for 2027. UPS changes take effect on December 21, 2026, and FedEx follows on January 4, 2027. For ecommerce brands, the headline number understates the real hit: light parcels under 5 pounds and the residential and delivery area surcharges that land on almost every home delivery are rising faster than 5.9%.

When Do the 2027 UPS and FedEx Rate Increases Take Effect?

The two carriers are again two weeks apart, which means brands shipping through the holidays will see UPS rates change before the year ends.

  • UPS: 5.9% average increase on Ground, Air and International daily rates, effective December 21, 2026.
  • FedEx: 5.9% average increase on U.S. package services, including import and export, effective January 4, 2027. Minimum charges and most surcharges change on the same date.
  • FedEx paper fees: starting January 18, 2027, a $25 fee applies when trade documents are provided on paper instead of electronically, and a $5 fee applies to shipments created with manual paper airbills.
  • UPS small business rates: a 4.5% increase on Ground, Air and International, also on December 21.

This is the fourth year in a row that both carriers have used a 5.9% headline figure, according to Supply Chain Dive and PARCEL Industry.

Why Is the Real Increase Higher Than 5.9% for Ecommerce Brands?

The 5.9% figure is an average across base rates for every service, weight and zone. Most direct-to-consumer brands ship a narrow slice of that table: light packages, by ground, to residential addresses. That slice is where the increases cluster.

  • UPS Ground, 1โ€“5 lb packages: up 6.13%, compared with a 5.67% average across all Ground weights, per PARCEL Industry's analysis of the UPS rate tables.
  • FedEx Ground, 1โ€“5 lb packages: up 6.49%, higher than heavier weight brackets, per analysis cited by Supply Chain Dive.
  • UPS Ground minimum charge: rises from $11.99 to $12.70, a 5.92% increase. Because many small parcels already bill near the minimum, this sets the floor for your cheapest shipments.

Heavier packages over 31 pounds see smaller percentage increases on UPS Ground, so a brand shipping mostly bulky items may come in under the headline on base rates alone, but not once surcharges are added.

Which Surcharges Are Going Up the Most in 2027?

Surcharges are rising much faster than base rates. TransImpact calculated that the most-used UPS accessorials average a 9.93% increase. Here are the line items most ecommerce shippers pay, using the published 2026 and 2027 list amounts reported by PARCEL Industry (UPS) and Supply Chain Dive (FedEx).

UPS (effective December 21, 2026)

  • Residential surcharge, Ground: $6.50 to $7.10
  • Residential surcharge, Air: $7.00 to $7.60
  • Delivery Area Surcharge, residential: $6.55 to $7.15
  • Delivery Area Surcharge, residential extended: $8.85 to $9.65
  • Address correction: $25.25 to $27.50
  • Additional Handling (weight), Zone 2: $46.50 to $50.50
  • Large Package, commercial, Zone 2: $219.50 to $250.00

FedEx (effective January 4, 2027)

  • Residential delivery charge: $6.95 to $7.35
  • Delivery Area Surcharge, residential: $6.60 to $7.00
  • Delivery Area Surcharge, commercial: $4.45 to $4.70
  • Additional Handling (weight-based), Zone 2: $46.00 to $49.50
  • Oversize, FedEx Home Delivery, Zones 3โ€“4: $275 to $290

One note on the numbers: some analyses quote a single UPS residential surcharge figure that averages the Ground and Air amounts, which is why you may see slightly different dollar values in other reports. Always check the line items on your own invoices.

What Else Is Changing at UPS for 2027?

A few UPS changes go beyond prices on a rate card:

  • Additional Handling minimum weight: packages that trigger the Additional Handling surcharge will be billed at a minimum of 50 pounds instead of 40, starting December 21. A long, light box that gets flagged will cost noticeably more.
  • Zone and ZIP code changes: the list of ZIP codes subject to area surcharges will change, and some ZIP codes will move to different zones.
  • New origin-based fee: UPS said a per-package fee will apply to Ground and Ground Saver shipments from certain origin ZIP codes for some customers, with the list to be published in early November. The amount had not been reported in the sources we reviewed, so treat this as pending.
  • Ground Saver rates: 2027 Ground Saver pricing had not been released when TransImpact published its analysis on October 30.

How Can Ecommerce Brands Reduce the Impact of the 2027 Rate Increases?

You cannot avoid a carrier's general rate increase, but you can control how many surcharges you trigger and how far your packages travel.

  • Pull a surcharge report now. Total what you paid last quarter in residential, delivery area, additional handling and address correction fees. Those lines are rising roughly 9%, so they are where your budget will move most.
  • Right-size your boxes. Dimensional weight and Additional Handling rules punish oversized cartons. Shaving a few inches off a long box can keep it below handling thresholds, which matters more now that the UPS minimum billable weight is rising to 50 pounds.
  • Validate addresses at checkout. An address correction fee of $27.50 on UPS can erase the margin on a small order.
  • Ship from closer to your customers. Lower zones mean lower base rates. For brands importing through Southern California, starting fulfillment near the ports shortens the path from container to customer.
  • Revisit your shipping thresholds. If free shipping starts at a set order value, recheck that number against 2027 costs before January.
  • Compare services, not just carriers. For time-tolerant orders, a slower service tier may rise less than a premium one. Analysts quoted by Supply Chain Dive specifically suggested modeling FedEx Express Saver as an alternative to 2Day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are UPS and FedEx raising rates for 2027?

Both carriers announced an average 5.9% increase. UPS takes effect December 21, 2026, and FedEx takes effect January 4, 2027. Your actual increase depends on your services, weights, zones and contract terms.

Why are my shipping costs going up more than 5.9%?

Light packages and residential deliveries are rising faster than the average. UPS Ground packages from 1 to 5 pounds go up 6.13%, and common surcharges such as residential and delivery area fees are up roughly 9%.

What is the UPS residential surcharge in 2027?

For UPS Ground, the published residential surcharge rises from $6.50 to $7.10 per package. For UPS Air services, it rises from $7.00 to $7.60. Negotiated discounts can lower what you actually pay.

Do negotiated carrier discounts protect me from the increase?

Usually only partly. Most discounts are a percentage off list rates, so when list rates rise your net cost rises too. Some agreements also cap or exclude discounts on certain surcharges, so review yours before the new rates start.
